Quilting 101

Quilting PatternsBelow will be some terminology to help both of us understand how you would like your quilt top finished.

Stippling:

This is a good over-all pattern resembling puzzle pieces. Stippling can be small, medium, or large. Small to medium is usually placed around other quilting designs. Medium or large stippling can stand alone. Stipple meandering can create texture and design.

Freehand Overall Quilting:

A set, particular quilting pattern may not be seen over the entire quilt. This form is done freehand without the aide of a paper pattern or computer generated quilting pattern/s.

Edge-To-Edge:

Quilting patterns are stitched on your quilt and does not follow the pieced pattern of your quilt. This form of quilting pattern is applied in rows. It can or does not have to be done in the border areas.

Edge-To-Edge with Border Treatment:

This form utilizes the above Edge-To-Edge then a different pattern is placed in the border areas. This usually involves quilting two borders, then removing the quilt and repining the quilt to the leaders for quilting the other two borders.

Custom Quilting:

This method involves incorporating two or more quilting patterns within the quilt top design. Sometimes a specific quilting pattern is sewn into each block with another pattern, which compliments the original design, in other areas, i.e., formal feathers, floral, or a specific design around closed shapes.

Plain Threads:

Quilting patterns would be stitched utilizing cotton thread.

Specialty Threads:

This would include quilting patterns stitched into the quilt that would be variegated or metallic in nature.
